About This Tool
Why use VAT Calculator?
This VAT calculator adds VAT to a net price or strips VAT out of a gross price, using the standard rates for the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Australian and New Zealand GST, and Canadian GST, or any custom rate you enter.
Removing VAT is where mistakes happen. On a £240 gross price at 20%, the net is £240 ÷ 1.20 = £200 and the VAT is £40. Taking 20% off the gross instead gives £192, which is wrong by £8 — because the 20% was charged on the net figure, not the gross one.
Key Benefits
Both directions
Adds VAT to a net price and extracts it from a VAT-inclusive total, using the correct divisor rather than a subtraction.
Country presets
Standard rates for the UK, major EU countries, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, with a custom option for reduced rates.
All three figures shown
Net, VAT and gross are displayed together, which is exactly what an invoice line or a bookkeeping entry needs.

VAT Calculator FAQs
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 20% VAT, divide by 1.20; at 23%, divide by 1.23. The VAT is the difference between the gross and the net. Subtracting the percentage from the gross gives the wrong answer, because VAT is calculated on the net price.
What is the UK VAT rate?
The standard UK rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to things like domestic fuel, children's car seats and some energy-saving materials, and a zero rate applies to most food, books, newspapers and children's clothing. Use the custom rate option for anything that is not standard-rated.
What is the VAT fraction?
It is the shortcut for finding VAT within a gross amount. At 20% the fraction is 1/6, so the VAT in a £240 gross price is £240 ÷ 6 = £40. At 23% it is 23/123. The calculator applies the equivalent arithmetic for whichever rate you pick.
Do I need to register for VAT?
In the UK, registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes the annual threshold, and voluntary registration is possible below it. Thresholds and rules differ in every country, so check with your local tax authority or an accountant — this calculator handles the arithmetic, not your registration obligations.
