About This Tool

Why use Ideal Weight Calculator?

Ideal body weight formulas were developed to guide medication dosing and nutrition planning, not to set a beauty standard. This calculator shows four of them — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — plus their average and the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.

All four work the same way: a base weight for the first 5 feet (152.4 cm) of height, plus a fixed amount per additional inch. Devine (1974), the most cited, uses 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch for men and 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for women. The results differ by a few kilograms, which is a fair reminder that there is no single correct weight — the BMI range is usually the more practical target.

Ideal Weight Calculator FAQs

Which ideal weight formula should I use?

Devine is the most widely cited and is standard for medication dosing. Robinson and Miller were later revisions that tend to give slightly lower figures. For everyday purposes the healthy BMI range is more useful than any single formula.

Do these formulas account for build or muscle?

No. They use height and sex only. A muscular or large-framed person can be healthy well above the formula weight, which is why the BMI range is shown alongside.

Why do the four results differ?

Each was developed from a different population and purpose, and each uses a different base weight and per-inch increment. A spread of a few kilograms between them is normal.

Are they suitable for children?

No. These formulas are for adults. Children and teenagers are assessed with age-and-sex growth charts instead.
