Quick Tip
Enter the distance travelled in metres.
About This Tool
Why use Velocity Calculator?
Velocity is displacement divided by time. Enter a distance in metres and a time in seconds and this calculator returns the velocity in m/s, then converts it to km/h, mph and ft/s.
For 100 metres in 12 seconds the velocity is 8.33 m/s, which is 30 km/h, 18.6 mph or 27.3 ft/s. In physics, velocity is a vector: it has direction as well as size, so motion in the opposite direction is written as a negative value.
Key Benefits
Four units at once
SI units for coursework plus everyday units for a sense of scale.
Built on the standard formula
v = d ÷ t, the same relationship used throughout mechanics.
Direct link to other motion tools
The result feeds straight into momentum (p = mv) and kinetic energy (½mv²) calculations.
How to use Velocity Calculator
- 1
Enter the distance travelled in metres.
- 2
Enter the time taken in seconds.
- 3
Read the velocity in m/s, along with km/h, mph and ft/s conversions.
- 4
Use a negative distance if you need to show motion in the opposite direction.
Best use cases
Solve velocity problems in physics homework.
Convert a lab measurement in m/s into km/h or mph.
Find the speed term needed for a kinetic energy calculation.
Check the average velocity of a vehicle or falling object over a measured distance.
Velocity Calculator FAQs
What is the velocity formula?
v = d ÷ t, where d is displacement and t is time. For 150 m in 20 s, v = 7.5 m/s.
How is velocity different from speed?
Speed is a scalar — size only. Velocity is a vector and includes direction, so an object that returns to its starting point has zero average velocity but a non-zero average speed.
How do I convert m/s to mph?
Multiply by 2.23694. So 10 m/s is 22.37 mph.
What is the difference between average and instantaneous velocity?
Average velocity uses the total displacement over the total time. Instantaneous velocity is the value at a single moment, which calculus defines as the derivative of position with respect to time.
