How to Calculate Your GPA on the 4.0 Scale (and Actually Raise It)

Most students can name their GPA without being able to explain how it was produced. That matters, because the mechanics tell you exactly which grades move the number and which barely touch it.

GPA is weighted by credit hours

This is the part that catches people out. GPA is not the average of your letter grades. Each course contributes in proportion to its credit hours.

The calculation has three steps:

  1. Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on)
  2. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points
  3. Add all the quality points and divide by the total credit hours

An A in a 4-credit course contributes 16 quality points. An A in a 2-credit course contributes 8. The same letter grade, twice the impact.

A worked example

Take a semester with four courses:

  • English, 3 credits, A (4.0) → 12.0 quality points
  • Calculus, 4 credits, B+ (3.3) → 13.2 quality points
  • Biology, 3 credits, B (3.0) → 9.0 quality points
  • History, 2 credits, A− (3.7) → 7.4 quality points

Total quality points: 41.6. Total credits: 12.

Semester GPA = 41.6 ÷ 12 = 3.47

Adding it to your cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA works the same way across your whole record. Suppose you already held a 3.20 GPA across 30 credits before this semester.

Your prior quality points are 3.20 × 30 = 96. Add this semester's 41.6 for a total of 137.6, across 42 total credits.

Cumulative GPA = 137.6 ÷ 42 = 3.28

A strong 3.47 semester moved the cumulative figure by only 0.08. That is not a mistake — it is the single most important thing to understand about GPA.

Why GPA gets harder to move over time

Early in a degree, each semester is a large share of a small total, so grades swing the cumulative number significantly. By your final year, one semester might be 12 credits out of 110, and even a perfect term barely registers.

Two practical consequences follow.

Early grades matter disproportionately. First-year courses are often the easiest ones you will take and they carry the most leverage over your final GPA. Treating them casually because "they're just intro classes" is expensive.

Late recovery is slow. If you need to raise a cumulative GPA in your final year, the maths is working against you. Focus on protecting what you have and on the specific requirements that actually gate what you want next.

Where the leverage really is

High-credit courses. A 4 or 5-credit course moves your GPA roughly twice as much as a 2-credit one. When deciding where to spend your limited revision time, spend it there.

Grade replacement policies. Many institutions let a retake replace the original grade rather than averaging the two. Where that applies, retaking a failed or very low course is by far the most efficient repair available. Check your specific institution's policy, because the rules vary and often have limits.

Plus and minus grades. At most institutions an A− is 3.7 rather than 4.0. The difference between an 89% and a 90% can be a third of a grade point on a high-credit course — which is usually where late-semester effort pays best.

Before you panic about a number

GPA matters, but it is one input among several. Graduate programmes and employers also weigh course difficulty, your major, an upward trend across semesters, research, internships and references.

A 3.3 that climbed steadily from a rough first year tells a better story than a 3.5 that fell apart at the end. Trajectory is visible on a transcript, and people do read it.
