About This Tool

Why use Excel to JSON?

Turn an Excel spreadsheet into a JSON array. The workbook is read with SheetJS, the first sheet's header row becomes the keys, and each subsequent row becomes an object — the shape an API, a JavaScript application or a seed script actually wants.

It reads the first worksheet in the file. If the workbook has several tabs and you need a later one, move it to the front or save it separately before converting. Cell values come through with their types intact, so numbers arrive as JSON numbers and dates as Excel's serial values rather than everything being a string.

Key Benefits

Headers become keys

Row 1 supplies the property names, so you get an array of named objects rather than an array of positional arrays.

Reads .xlsx and .xls

Both modern and legacy Excel files are handled, so an old export does not need converting twice.

Parsed locally

Spreadsheets are read in the browser, so business data is not uploaded to a conversion service.

How to use Excel to JSON

  1. 1

Select the .xlsx or .xls file.

  2. 2

Make sure the sheet you want is the first one in the workbook, and that row 1 holds the column headers.

  3. 3

Convert; the sheet becomes an array of objects.

  4. 4

Copy the JSON or download it for your application.

Best use cases

Turn a spreadsheet into seed data for an application or a test.

Move a product or contact list into a JSON-based system.

Feed spreadsheet rows into a script without writing a parser.

Excel to JSON FAQs

Which sheet gets converted?

The first worksheet in the workbook. If you need a different tab, move it to the front in Excel, or save that sheet as its own file before converting.

Where do the JSON keys come from?

The first row of the sheet. Make sure row 1 holds your column headers rather than a title or a blank spacer row.

How are dates handled?

Excel stores dates as serial numbers, so they come through as numbers rather than date strings. Convert them in your code, or format the column as text in Excel before converting.

What happens to empty cells?

An empty cell means the key is simply absent from that row's object. Check for missing properties rather than assuming every object has every key.
