About This Tool

Why use HTML to Text?

Strip HTML down to its readable text. The markup is parsed with DOMParser into an inert document — nothing is executed and no image or script referenced in the markup is fetched — and script, style and noscript blocks are removed before the text is read, so you do not get CSS rules and JavaScript mixed in with the content.

That inert parsing matters when the HTML came from somewhere you do not control: a scraped page, an email source, a customer's ticket. Assigning untrusted markup into a live element can cause resources to be requested; parsing it into a detached document cannot. What you get back is the words, ready for a word count, a translation tool, a language model or a plain text email.

Key Benefits

Parsed inertly

DOMParser builds a document that never executes anything or loads referenced resources, which is the safe way to handle markup from an unknown source.

Scripts and styles removed

Script, style and noscript blocks are stripped first, so CSS and JavaScript do not end up in your text.

Nothing transmitted

The markup is processed in your browser, so page sources and email bodies are not uploaded.

HTML to Text FAQs

Will CSS and JavaScript end up in the text?

No. Script, style and noscript blocks are removed before the text is read, which is what makes the difference between usable output and a page of CSS rules.

Is it safe to paste HTML from an untrusted source?

Yes. The markup is parsed into an inert document, so nothing in it executes and no resource it references is fetched.

Are links preserved?

Only the link text. The href is dropped, because a URL is markup rather than readable content. Use HTML to Markdown if you need the links kept.

What happens to the layout?

It is removed along with the tags. You get the text content in document order, with formatting, tables and columns gone.
