About This Tool

Why use Temperature Converter?

Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Unlike other units, temperature scales have different zero points as well as different degree sizes, so conversion needs a formula rather than a single multiplier: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and K = °C + 273.15.

The reference points worth memorising: water freezes at 0 °C / 32 °F and boils at 100 °C / 212 °F, normal body temperature is around 37 °C / 98.6 °F, and −40 is the one value where Celsius and Fahrenheit agree. Kelvin starts at absolute zero, −273.15 °C, and has no negative values.

Key Benefits

Three scales

Celsius for most of the world, Fahrenheit for the US, Kelvin for science.

Correct formulas, not factors

The offset is applied as well as the scaling, which is where manual conversions usually go wrong.

Negative values handled

Sub-zero temperatures convert correctly in both directions.

How to use Temperature Converter

  1. 1

Select the scale you are converting from and to.

  2. 2

Enter the temperature, including a minus sign for values below zero.

  3. 3

    Read the converted value.

  4. 4

Swap the scales to convert back.

Best use cases

Convert an oven temperature in a recipe from the other system.

Read a weather forecast from another country.

Convert a body temperature reading.

Work with Kelvin in a physics or chemistry problem.

Temperature Converter FAQs

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 1.8 and add 32. 25 °C is 25 × 1.8 + 32 = 77 °F.

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. 100 °F is (100 − 32) × 0.5556 = 37.8 °C.

What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?

356 °F, the common baking temperature usually rounded to 350 °F in US recipes and roughly gas mark 4.

Why is there no degree symbol with Kelvin?

Kelvin is an absolute scale, so its unit is simply the kelvin: 300 K, not 300 °K. Its steps are the same size as Celsius degrees.
