About This Tool

Why use RAR to ZIP?

This tool does not convert RAR files yet, and it will tell you so rather than hand you a renamed file. Unpacking a RAR requires an unrar decoder, and RAR is a proprietary format whose decompression algorithm is owned by RARLAB — there is no open implementation that can be shipped into a browser build the way ZIP, TAR and gzip can.

What works today: if you can extract the RAR on your own machine, the File to ZIP tool will repack those files into a ZIP archive in your browser. On Windows, 7-Zip and WinRAR both extract RAR for free; on macOS, The Unarchiver; on Linux, the unrar package. If you would like this format prioritised, the contact link on this page reaches us directly.

Key Benefits

No fake output

Rather than renaming your RAR and calling it a ZIP, the tool says plainly that it cannot do the conversion yet.

A working route instead

Extract locally with a free archiver, then use File to ZIP here to repack the contents into a proper archive.

Why the limitation is real

RAR decompression is proprietary to RARLAB, so there is no open decoder that can run inside a browser.

RAR to ZIP FAQs

Why can this site not extract RAR files?

RAR's decompression algorithm is proprietary to RARLAB. There is no open implementation to compile into a browser build, which is why ZIP, TAR and gzip are supported here and RAR is not.

What should I use instead?

7-Zip or WinRAR on Windows, The Unarchiver on macOS, or the unrar package on Linux. All of them extract RAR without cost.

Can I still get a ZIP out of my RAR?

Yes, in two steps. Extract the RAR locally, then add the extracted files to the File to ZIP tool here to build a ZIP archive.

Will RAR support be added?

It would need a decoder that can legally and practically run in a browser. If this matters to your work, use the contact link on this page and say so.
