About This Tool
Why use ZIP to RAR?
This tool does not create RAR archives yet, and says so rather than handing back a renamed ZIP. Writing a RAR requires WinRAR's own compressor: unlike ZIP, where the format and algorithms are open and can be implemented in JavaScript, RAR compression is proprietary and RARLAB licenses no library that runs in a browser.
In practice this is rarely the blocker it appears to be. RAR's advantages over ZIP — better compression ratios, recovery records, solid archiving — matter for large multi-part archives, not for sending someone a set of files. ZIP opens natively on every operating system in use, including phones, while RAR needs software installed. If your recipient specifically requires RAR, WinRAR on Windows is the only real way to produce one.
Key Benefits
No fake output
The tool refuses rather than renaming a ZIP to .rar, which produces a file that no archiver will open.
ZIP is usually the answer
Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android all open ZIP natively. RAR needs software installed on the recipient's machine.
Why the limitation is real
RAR compression is proprietary to RARLAB and no licensed library exists that can run in a browser build.

ZIP to RAR FAQs
Why can I not create a RAR here?
RAR compression is proprietary to RARLAB, which licenses no library that runs in a browser. ZIP's format and algorithms are open, which is why ZIP creation works and RAR does not.
Is RAR better than ZIP?
It compresses somewhat better and offers recovery records and solid archiving. For sending files to someone, those advantages rarely matter, and ZIP's universal support usually does.
How do I make a RAR if I really need one?
WinRAR on Windows is effectively the only way. It is the reference implementation from the format's owner.
What can I use on this site instead?
The File to ZIP tool builds a standard ZIP archive in your browser from any set of files.
