About This Tool
Why use YAML to JSON?
Parse YAML and get JSON back. The document is read with js-yaml, so anchors and aliases are resolved, multi-line block scalars are folded into strings, and the result is the actual data structure your YAML describes rather than a guess at it.
The most common reason to convert is debugging. YAML's meaning lives in its indentation, which makes it easy to write something that parses cleanly but nests differently from what you intended — a list that ended up one level too deep, a key that belongs to the wrong parent. Seeing the same document as explicit JSON braces and brackets makes that obvious in seconds. If the YAML is invalid, the parser says where the problem is instead of failing silently.
Key Benefits
Anchors and aliases resolved
&defaults and *defaults references are expanded during parsing, so you see the values your config actually resolves to.
Errors point at the problem
Invalid YAML reports what went wrong rather than silently returning nothing, which is half the reason to run a config through a parser.
Nesting made explicit
JSON's braces and brackets show structure that indentation hides, which is the fastest way to spot a misplaced list item.
How to use YAML to JSON
- 1
Paste your YAML — a workflow file, a manifest, a compose file.
- 2
Convert; anchors and aliases are resolved as part of parsing.
- 3
Read the JSON and check that the nesting matches what you intended.
- 4
Copy the JSON, or go back and fix the indentation the output revealed.
Best use cases
Debug a Kubernetes manifest or GitHub Actions workflow that is not behaving.
Check what a config with anchors and aliases actually resolves to.
Feed a YAML config into code or an API that expects JSON.
Verify indentation by seeing the structure it produces.
YAML to JSON FAQs
What happens to comments in my YAML?
They are dropped. JSON has no comment syntax, so anything after a # is lost. Keep the YAML file as your source of truth.
Are anchors and aliases expanded?
Yes. &anchor definitions and *alias references are resolved during parsing, so the JSON shows the values your config actually ends up with.
Why does my YAML fail to parse?
Almost always indentation — a tab where spaces are required, or a list item at the wrong depth. YAML forbids tabs for indentation entirely. The error message points at the line.
Can I convert multi-document YAML?
Files separated by --- contain several documents. Convert one document at a time for predictable results.
