Why use Tip Calculator?
This tip calculator works out the tip, the total bill and the amount each person owes when splitting the check. It lets you tip on the pre-tax amount or on the post-tax total, and can round each person's share up to a whole amount.
Example: an $85 bill with 8% sales tax, tipping 18% on the pre-tax amount and splitting between two people. Tax is $6.80 and the tip is $15.30, giving a total of $107.10, or $53.55 each. Tipping on the post-tax total instead makes the tip $16.52 and the total $108.32 — a difference of about $1.22.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down table service, with 20% now common for good service. Norms differ sharply elsewhere: tipping is modest or rounded-up in much of Europe, and in Japan it is not expected at all.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guidance generally says the pre-tax amount, since tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the post-tax total is also widespread and simply costs a little more — on an $85 bill with 8% tax, the difference at 18% is about $1.22.
What if a service charge is already included?
Check the bill before adding anything. Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity for larger groups, usually 18–20%, and tipping again on top duplicates it. If the service charge is already there, an extra tip is optional rather than expected.
How do I split a bill when people ordered differently?
This calculator splits evenly, which is simplest and fairest when orders were broadly similar. If one person ordered far more, work out individual subtotals first, then apply the same tax and tip percentage to each person's share.
