About This Tool
Why use BMP to PNG?
Convert an old BMP bitmap into a PNG. BMP normally stores every pixel completely uncompressed, which is why a modest image can run to several megabytes; PNG stores exactly the same pixels with lossless compression and typically comes out a fraction of the size.
Because both formats are lossless, nothing is degraded — this is a straight repackaging, not a quality trade. BMP files turn up from old Windows software, scanners, screenshot tools and industrial or medical equipment that has not been updated in years, and almost nothing on the modern web will display one. PNG is the right destination for all of it.
Key Benefits
Big size reduction
BMP is uncompressed. PNG's lossless compression often cuts the file to a small fraction of the original with identical pixels.
Nothing is lost
Both formats store exact pixel values, so the PNG is a perfect copy rather than a compressed approximation.
Usable on the web
Browsers, CMSs and upload forms all handle PNG. BMP is effectively a legacy desktop format.
How to use BMP to PNG
- 1
Select the .bmp file.
- 2
Convert; the bitmap is decoded and re-encoded as PNG.
- 3
Compare the new file size against the original.
- 4
Download the PNG.
Best use cases
Modernise images exported from old Windows software.
Shrink oversized bitmaps from a scanner or capture tool.
Put a BMP on a website or into a document.
Reduce storage for an archive of uncompressed bitmaps.
BMP to PNG FAQs
Does converting BMP to PNG lose quality?
No. Both are lossless formats, so the PNG contains exactly the same pixels as the BMP — just stored far more efficiently.
How much smaller will the PNG be?
Often dramatically. BMP stores every pixel raw, so images with flat colour, screenshots and line art can shrink by 90 per cent or more. Photographs compress less.
Why is BMP still around?
It is simple and needs no decoding, so old Windows applications, some scanners and various industrial and medical devices still write it.
Should I convert to PNG or JPG?
PNG if the image is a screenshot, diagram or has flat colours, which describes most BMPs. JPG only if it is a photograph and you want the smallest possible file.
