About This Tool

Why use WebP to PNG?

Turn a WebP image into a PNG that every application can open. The WebP is decoded by the browser — which supports the format natively — and written out as a lossless PNG, with any transparency carried over intact.

WebP is excellent on the web and awkward everywhere else. Older design software, print workflows, some CMS uploaders and plenty of desktop apps still refuse it, which is why the image you saved from a website will not open. PNG is the safe universal answer, and because it is lossless nothing is degraded in the process — though the file will usually be larger, since WebP was designed to be smaller than PNG in the first place.

Key Benefits

Transparency preserved

Both WebP and PNG support an alpha channel, so transparent logos and cutouts survive the conversion unchanged.

Opens everywhere

PNG is supported by every image viewer, editor and uploader, which WebP still is not outside the browser.

Lossless re-encode

PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly, so nothing is degraded even if the source WebP was lossy.

Best use cases

Prepare a WebP asset for a print or design workflow.

Attach an image to software that shows a WebP as a broken file.

WebP to PNG FAQs

Why will nothing on my computer open a .webp file?

WebP is a web format. Browsers support it, but many desktop editors, older operating systems and upload forms still do not. Converting to PNG removes the problem entirely.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so transparent regions in the WebP come through exactly as they were.

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

WebP exists specifically to be smaller than PNG and JPEG. Going back to PNG gives up that efficiency in exchange for compatibility.

What about animated WebP files?

Only the first frame is converted, because PNG is a still image format. An animated WebP needs GIF or a video format to stay animated.
