About This Tool
Why use Data Storage Converter?
Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. The complication is that two definitions are in use: the decimal one where 1 GB = 1,000 MB, used by drive manufacturers, networks and the SI standard, and the binary one where 1 GB = 1,024 MB, used by Windows and many applications.
That gap is why a drive sold as 1 TB shows as about 931 GB in Windows: 1,000,000,000,000 bytes divided by 1024³. The strictly correct names for the binary units are kibibyte, mebibyte and gibibyte (KiB, MiB, GiB), though few interfaces use them.
Key Benefits
Covers the full range
Bytes through terabytes, for file sizes, memory and storage planning.
Explains the 1,000 versus 1,024 gap
The reason your new drive looks smaller than advertised, set out plainly.
Useful for upload limits
Quickly check whether a file fits a limit quoted in a different unit.
How to use Data Storage Converter
- 1
Pick the unit you have and the unit you want.
- 2
Enter the value and read the converted size.
- 3
Check which definition your source uses before comparing two figures.
- 4
Swap the units to convert back.
Best use cases
Check whether a file fits an upload limit given in MB.
Work out why a hard drive shows less capacity than the box claims.
Convert a data allowance between GB and MB.
Estimate how many files fit on a card or a drive.
Data Storage Converter FAQs
How many MB are in a GB?
1,000 using the decimal definition that storage makers and networks use, or 1,024 using the binary definition that Windows reports.
Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
The manufacturer counts 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, while Windows divides by 1024³. The drive is not faulty; the two are measuring with different units.
What are KiB, MiB and GiB?
The binary units: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes and 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. They exist to remove the ambiguity, though most software still writes KB and MB.
How many photos fit in a gigabyte?
Roughly 300–400 phone photos at about 3 MB each, or far fewer if you shoot RAW, where a single file can be 25 MB or more.
