Quick Tip

Choose the unit your figure is in, taking care to pick US or UK MPG correctly.

About This Tool

Why use Fuel Converter?

Convert between miles per gallon (US), miles per gallon (UK), litres per 100 km and kilometres per litre. Two things make this trickier than a normal unit conversion: the US and imperial gallons differ, and L/100 km is an inverse measure.

Because litres per 100 km counts consumption rather than efficiency, lower is better and the relationship is not linear: 235.2 ÷ MPG(US) gives L/100 km. So 30 US MPG is 7.84 L/100 km, while 40 MPG is 5.88. An imperial gallon is 4.546 litres against the US gallon's 3.785, which makes UK MPG figures about 20% higher for the same car.

Key Benefits

US and UK gallons kept separate

The two MPG scales differ by about 20%, and mixing them is the most common fuel-economy mistake.

Handles the inverse relationship

L/100 km measures consumption, so the conversion divides rather than multiplies.

Four common units

Covers figures quoted in the US, the UK, Europe and India.

How to use Fuel Converter

  1. 1

Choose the unit your figure is in, taking care to pick US or UK MPG correctly.

  2. 2

    Enter the value.

  3. 3

Read the converted efficiency or consumption figure.

  4. 4

Remember that lower L/100 km and higher MPG both mean better economy.

Best use cases

Compare a US car's MPG with a European L/100 km figure.

Convert a rental car's economy rating while travelling.

Check fuel costs when a manual quotes a different unit.

Compare km/L figures used in India and Japan with MPG.

Fuel Converter FAQs

How do I convert MPG to L/100 km?

Divide 235.215 by the US MPG figure, or 282.481 by the UK figure. 30 US MPG is 7.84 L/100 km.

Why are UK MPG figures higher than US ones?

An imperial gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon is 3.785, so the same car travels further on a UK gallon. The UK figure is about 20% higher for identical consumption.

Is a lower L/100 km better?

Yes. It measures how much fuel is used per distance, so a smaller number means better economy — the opposite of MPG.

How do I convert km/L to L/100 km?

Divide 100 by the km/L figure. 15 km/L is 6.67 L/100 km.
