About This Tool

Why use Torque Converter?

Convert between newton-metres, kilogram-metres, pound-feet and pound-inches. Torque is a turning force — a force applied at a distance from a pivot — so its units always combine a force with a length.

Car engine outputs and wheel-nut specifications are the usual reasons to convert: 1 lb·ft is 1.35582 N·m, so a 200 lb·ft engine produces 271 N·m. Bicycle and electronics work is usually specified in pound-inches, where 1 lb·ft = 12 lb·in.

Key Benefits

Metric and imperial torque

N·m, kg·m, lb·ft and lb·in, covering workshop manuals from any market.

Exact conversion factors

Derived from the definitions of the pound-force and the foot, so tightening specs stay accurate.

Handles small fasteners

Pound-inches for electronics, bicycle components and fine assemblies.

How to use Torque Converter

  1. 1

Choose the unit you have and the unit you want.

  2. 2

    Enter the torque value.

  3. 3

    Read the converted result.

  4. 4

Set your torque wrench to the converted figure, not the original one.

Best use cases

Set a torque wrench from a manual written in different units.

Compare engine torque figures across markets.

Convert a fastener specification for assembly work.

Check bicycle component torque given in N·m.

Torque Converter FAQs

How many newton-metres is 1 pound-foot?

1.35582 N·m. To go the other way, multiply N·m by 0.7376.

Is torque the same as power?

No. Torque is turning force; power is torque multiplied by rotational speed. An engine can produce high torque at low revs and still have modest power.

How many pound-inches are in a pound-foot?

Twelve, since a foot is twelve inches. A 60 lb·in specification is 5 lb·ft.

Why does over-tightening matter?

Too much torque stretches or snaps fasteners and warps components; too little lets them loosen. Manufacturer figures exist for a reason, so convert carefully.
